There are several significant signs that would show whenever your range hood is struggling to do its job. Usually, it would wear down over time because of the build-up of grease or because of the constant use. Here are some signs that would tell you that it is time to call a professional.

  • Even when the vent hood is on its optimal setting, smoke isn’t clearing from the kitchen. If this occurs, perhaps the ducting on your range hood is clogged or obstructed with grease. Also, it can be a non-functioning fan due to a worn-out motor or greasy motor. Lastly, the problem could be traceable to its air filter requiring being replaced or cleaned.
  • The motor is excessively loud or humming. The motor possibly requires cleaning if it is generating odd noises. It might be rubbing against an obstructing object that prevents it from functioning properly. Also, this symptom could be an indication that the motor must be replaced.

One part of your range hood that eliminates smoke and particulates from the smoke before recirculating it is the air filter. Air filter have 2 types – a charcoal filter and a metal filter. Both these 2 types could be removed easily for replacement and cleaning.

  • Just remove a metal filter and place it in a suitable container or tiny bin filled with degreasing cleaning product to completely cover the filter. Wash the filter in soapy and warm water once all the grease has been removed. For proper cleaning, place the metal filter in the dishwasher’s top rack. Be sure that the filter is fully dry before reattaching it to your range hood.
  • The removal of a charcoal filter is the same as the metal filter. However, you cannot clean a charcoal filter. You will have to completely replace it. It is a good idea to replace it once a year.
